From the Senior Pastor – November 2013

The sixth and final core value of Christ the King Lutheran Church is to give of our time, talents, and financial resources. The other core values of Christ the King Lutheran Church are daily prayer, worship regularly, read and study scripture, serve at Christ the King and to the community beyond our doors, and to encourage spiritual growth in others. These six core values give structure and meaning to the spiritual and communal life of Christ the King. They direct us in our growth, ministries, and oneness with God.

There are numerous scripture passages which speak of the importance of giving of ourselves and the gifts that God so graciously bestows upon us. Some of these are:

“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”(1 Corinthians 12:4-7)

“Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.”(1 Peter 4:10)

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”(Matthew 6:21)

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”(1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

“And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
(Colossians 3:15-17)

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God and not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.”(Ephesians 2:8-10)

“But each has a particular gift from God, one having one kind and another a different kind.”(1 Corinthians 7:7)

“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”(1 Corinthians 15:57)

The common theme running through many of these passages is one of thanksgiving, of living a life of gratitude in our words and deeds. It is natural to give thanks in the month of November as the Thanksgiving holiday offers opportunities to see family and friends and grow in our relationships with one another. I invite you to give thanks today and every day for the gifts of God given to you. God’s love is steadfast, and God will always bless you so that you can be a blessing to others.

Living in God’s amazing grace,

Pastor Matthew Groenke
