FROM THE SENIOR PASTOR – FEBRUARY 2015

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”(2 Peter 3:18)

We are fast approaching the season of Lent, a time in the church year set aside for preparation for the events of Holy Week and for continued growth in faith through the power of the Holy Spirit. I cannot begin to count the number of times that I was told during my years of confirmation studies this highlighted verse from 2 Peter. The opportunity and responsibility to grow in faith, in my relationship with God, in my constant need to live out my faith in a community of believers was always emphasized. This year at Christ the King our mid-week Lenten services will offer an opportunity to reflect and grow in the basics of our Christian faith as laid out in Luther’s Small Catechism. We will gather to worship using the Holden Evening Prayer Service, and I will share a few thoughts each week after Ash Wednesday on one aspect of the Small Catechism.

This is the schedule for Lent:

February 18th – Soup supper at 6 pm, Ash Wednesday worship at 7 pm with the imposition of ashes and holy communion, cantata practice at 8 pm.

February 25th – Soup supper at 6 pm, worship at 7 pm with a homily on the Ten Commandments, cantata practice at 8 pm.

March 4th – soup supper at 6 pm, worship at 7 pm with a homily on the Apostles’ Creed, cantata practice at 8 pm.

March 11th – soup supper at 6 pm, worship at 7 pm with a homily on the Lord’s Prayer, cantata practice at 8 pm.

March 18th – soup supper at 6 pm, worship at 7 pm with a homily on the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, cantata practice at 8 pm.

March 25th – soup supper at 6 pm, worship at 7 pm with a homily on the Sacrament of Holy Communion, cantata practice at 8 pm.

I invite you to take advantage of our Lenten devotional resources, our worship opportunities, daily reflection on scripture and acts of service for our neighbors. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”(Romans 15:13)

Living in God’s amazing grace,

Pastor Matthew Groenke
